MORES Hot Topic Webinar (2022/2023)
The Master of Health Research Ethics (MOHRE) Programme, a collaborative effort between the Faculty of Medicine at Universiti Malaya and the Berman Institute of Bioethics at Johns Hopkins University, proudly presented our Hot Topics in Research Ethics Webinar Series.
The session titled "Ethics of Decentralized Clinical Trials" featured a distinguished speaker: Dr. Effy Vayena from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETHZ).The webinar focused on decentralized clinical trials, which involved an array of digital tools to facilitate research without physical contact among research teams and participants, including recruitment, enrollment, informed consent, administering study interventions, obtaining patient-reported outcome measures, and safety monitoring. These approaches provided ways of ensuring participant safety and research integrity, while sometimes reducing participant burden and trial costs. At the same time, these novel designs also raised ethical issues in relation to participants' safety and rights, the scientific validity of the study, and ethics oversight. In her talk, Professor Vayena described these issues and offered suggestions on how they could be addressed.
We express our heartfelt gratitude to all the participants and attendees of the event. The recording of the webinar can be accessed on the webpage of the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics.
