MOHRE Public Symposium 2025

Ethical Opportunities and Challenges of Using Digital Technologies in Health Research

The Master of Health Research Ethics (MOHRE) Programme, Universiti Malaya, in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics, hosted the MOHRE Public Symposium on 23 September 2025 at the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya.

This year’s symposium explored the theme “Ethical Opportunities and Challenges of Using Digital Technologies in Health Research”, bringing together scholars and practitioners to reflect on the evolving ethical dimensions of digital health innovations, including artificial intelligence (AI), mobile health applications, and data-driven research.

The distinguished panel featured:

  • Assoc. Prof. Dr. Joseph Ali – Associate Director, Global Programs, Berman Institute of Bioethics, Johns Hopkins University

  • Prof. Dr. Adina Abdullah – Family Medicine Professor, Department of Primary Care Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya

  • Prof. Dr. Jeremy Sugarman – Deputy Director for Medicine, Harvey M. Meyerhoff Professor of Bioethics and Medicine, Berman Institute of Bioethics, Johns Hopkins University

  • Dr. Alex Phang Kean Chang – Secretary, UMMC-Medical Research Ethics Committee, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya

The symposium fostered rich discussions on how emerging digital technologies are reshaping the landscape of health research, highlighting both their transformative potential and the ethical considerations they raise in terms of privacy, accountability, data integrity, and equity.

Participants included faculty members, researchers, postgraduate students, and ethics committee members, all of whom engaged in critical exchanges on how to responsibly integrate digital tools in research practice.
